  In addition to the education and performance credentials listed below, all members of the New England Percussion Ensemble have extensive teaching experience.  Our major strength is to be able to communicate with our audiences, and teach them using methods and language which they understand and are eager to receive.

 

Bob Otto – owner and director

Education:

  • Master of Music Education with Performance Emphasis, Hartt College of Music, University of Hartford, West Hartford, CT

  • Bachelor of Music in Education, Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY

  • Director of Fine Arts Certificate, Fitchburg State College, Fitchburg, MA

Military:

  • Bob performed throughout the United States with the U.S. Air Force bands, first stationed with the Strategic Air Command Band at Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, Nebraska. 

  • He then spent a tour of duty, appearing occasionally as soloist, with the Alaskan Air Command Band at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska.

  • He received an honorable discharge at the final grade of Staff Sergeant.

Performance:

  • He has been a free-lance drummer and percussionist in the area for nearly thirty years, performing music of all styles from classical orchestra to jazz, shows and pop. He began school performances through his membership in the Rhode Island Philharmonic Percussion Ensemble, became co-founder of the New England Percussion Ensemble in 1992, and leader in 1994.

Personal:

  • Bob lives in Raynham, MA with his wife, Mary Ellen. He enjoys outdoor activities which put him in touch with nature – definitely a carry-over from his experiences in Alaska. He is also the inventor, patent holder and manufacturer of the Rattler®, a percussion accessory device currently marketed world-wide by the Pro-Mark Corp., Houston, TX

   

Bill Manley

Education:

  • Master of Music in Percussion Performance, University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, Cincinnati, OH

  • Bachelor of Music Education, Crane School of Music, Potsdam, NY

Performance:

  • Bill’s free lance activity has encompassed a wide range of performance settings – from symphony orchestras to dance accompaniment.  He has performed and recorded with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, the Berkshire Opera Company and the Catskill Klezmorim.

  • Add to this list performances with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Lyric Opera Company.

Personal:

  • Bill and his wife, Alyssa, live in Medfield, MA.  His sunny day favorites are hiking, gardening, biking and skiing; and rainy days will find him visiting Boston’s museums.

   

     

Ed Sorrentino

Education:

  • Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Berklee College, Boston, MA

Performance:

  • In circles of professional musicians Ed is well known as a top notch “G.B.” (general business) drummer, something which requires him to wear a variety of musical hats and provide solid percussion for many of the area’s best jazz, rock, dixie and show bands.  He is also a percussion instructor, department head and program director at the South Shore Conservatory in Hingham, MA.

Personal:

  • Spare time at his home in Pembroke, MA finds Ed involved in canoeing and white water kayaking. 

   

Sal Ranniello

Education:

  • Bachelor of Music, Hartt School of Music, West Hartford, CT

Performance:

  • Sal is extremely “in demand” as a free-lancer in the central Connecticut area performing with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, and playing shows at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam and the Oakdale Musical Theater in Wallingford.  He also toured Europe with the musical, “Evita.” 

Personal:

  • He lives in Wethersfield with his wife, Siobhan, and their two children. Sal enjoys preparing meals the kitchen with his wife, and he is also a classic movie buff.

   

Steve Collins

Education:

  • Bachelor of Music, Hartt School of Music, West Hartford, CT

Performance:

  • Steve’s percussion skills are frequently heard in south / central Connecticut through his performances with symphony orchestras in New Haven, Bridgeport, Waterbury, Norwalk and New Britain.  He also plays shows at the Goodspeed Opera House, and with his wife formed the Collins Project Flute and Percussion Duo.  Steve also toured Europe with the Broadway cast of “Evita.”

Personal:

  • He lives in Trumbull with his wife, Kim, an excellent flutist. Aside from some creative work on his house and property, Steve also enjoys horseback riding and fishing.

   

Bob Schulz

Education:

  • Graduate Diploma in Percussion Performance, New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, MA

  • Master of Music in Jazz Studies, New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, MA    

  • Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance, State University of New York, Buffalo, NY

Performance:

  • Bob’s performance abilities display a tremendous amount of breadth and depth.  He has performed with many of the area’s premier musical organizations such as the Boston Symphony, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, AUROS Group for New Music and the Pro Arte Orchestra.  This is in addition to his continued activities as free-lance jazz drummer in the Boston area.

Personal:

  • He lives in Arlington, MA with his wife, Rose, and their two small children.  He is an avid golfer and says, “Yep, I can duff with the best of them.” 

   

Rich Greenblatt

Education:

  • Master of Music in Jazz Performance, University of Massachusetts at Lowell, Lowell, MA

  • Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance, Manhattan School of Music, New York, NY

Performance:

  • Rich’s talents allow him to move back and forth with ease between various musical genre.  His recent jazz experiences include the MFA Boston Jazz Series, the Ryles Jazz Festival and the Royal Sonesta Jazz Series; and in classical percussion he has appeared with the English Chamber Orchestra and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, Spain.  

Personal:

  • Rich lives in Arlington, MA with his wife, Mireia, and their two children.  Gourmet cooking and dining is a passion, but he also enjoys spending quality time with his family.  Rich is fluent in Spanish and Catalan, the northern dialect of Barcelona.

   

Chris Swist

Education:

  • Master of Music in Percussion Performance, Hartt School of Music, West Hartford, CT

  • Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance, State University of New York at Buffalo, Amherst, NY

Performance:

  • Chris provides percussion for a great variety of musical genre, not only symphony work in Connecticut, but as percussion accompanist for Seven Angels Theater in Waterbury and Dance Connecticut in Hartford, and as a member of the adjunct faculty at Bennington College, VT.

Personal:

  • A Hartford resident, his non-musical interests include biking, anthropology, weight-lifting, golf and racquetball.
